Special Spartan Accomplishment: Margaret Smedley
Posted on 07/31/2024
This August, Spartan Maggie Smedley will embark on a journey to Norway where she will live and study for the school year as part of the Rotary International’s Youth Exchange Program. Maggie learned about this opportunity at school when Carolyne Jordan, a member of the Rotary District’s Youth Exchange Board, visited the Jr./Sr. High School to meet with students and talk about the program.
Maggie shared that instantly after the meeting, she texted her mom and asked, “Can I be an exchange student?” Her response was, “Go for it!” After a few meetings, phone calls, and an interview, Maggie was accepted into the program and is being sponsored by the West Reading-Wyomissing Rotary Club.
This opportunity has already led to many others for Maggie. In addition to her excitement about visiting another country, she was introduced to the Rotary club where she has attended club meetings, two Rotary conferences, and has met so many wonderful inbound exchange students who are in the United States on an exchange. The students have had chances to gather together for fun events like going axe throwing or taking a group trip to Washington D.C.
Maggie is incredibly grateful for everything Rotary and the Youth Exchange Program is doing to prepare her for a great exchange. She is also so grateful for her supportive parents who will be hosting an exchange student while she is in Norway. We look forward to hearing about Maggie’s journey and her unique experience in Norway! Congratulations Maggie and best wishes!
