After correctly spelling “vacuousness,” eighth-grade student Katherine Kaufmann became the winner of the Wyomissing Area Junior Senior High School’s 2019 Spelling Bee. It was a hard-fought win, as Katherine went back and forth for multiple rounds with fellow eighth-grade student—and last year’s Spelling Bee winner—Benjamin Zobian.
A preliminary round of competition was held during homeroom for all seventh- and eighth-grade students in early November. From that round of competition, the top eight eighth grade students and top nine seventh grade students advanced to the final round of school competition, held prior to Winter Break.
Katherine will now participate in a preliminary written round, which is scheduled for February 21. Qualifiers from this round will participate in the Regional Final Round on March 27, at Northampton Community College’s Lipkin Theater in Bethlehem.
The Wyomissing Area School District wishes Katherine the best of luck!
